Our Team – John Essey
John is an entrepreneur by experience and a professional by trade. His career to date spans 24 years and has afforded him exposure to the Professional Services, Diversified Industrial and Financial Services sectors. He spent significant time overseas cutting his teeth on the complex inner workings of multi-national companies. John’s multifaceted experience has been rounded out through working in diverse company environments and locations throughout Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
His career began when with a post-article US-based secondment as part of the head office audit team for American Electric Power (AEP). The utility experience John gained from being part of the Eskom head office audit team for 3 years prior supported him greatly at AEP.
John then re-located to London for a period of 6 years, 3 of which were spent at Honeywell International. He formed part of a recently established team of six, performing due diligence and internal control analysis and implementation for 17 of their HVAC business units located across EMEA. The team was tasked with establishing how each business unit’s financial and management reporting differed to the next. This data informed the design and implementation of a standardized reporting solution across the region for integration into the US consolidation.
With the goal of acquiring banking experience, John spent the following 3 years contracting in the Financial Services sector in London. As a Senior Finance Manager in AVIVAs’s Group Capital Management and FM Development, he obtained experience in the production, forecasting and modelling of internal and external capital information. He also became acquainted with the preparation of discussion papers for executive management review concerning new Group Capital methodologies. In his last role in London with Deutsche Bank John oversaw the compilation of a 920 million Euro budget for their Global Technology Operations Centre.
After his time in London, John returned to South Africa where he spent 5 years at KPMG. 2 of which as a Senior Manager in Accounting Advisory Services and 3 in Corporate Finance as an Associate Director specializing in Project Finance. It was in this role that John became involved in large government transactions, particularly Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). The time spent working on PPP’s has afforded John an understanding of the administrative complexities that often occur when dealing with Public Sector clients and the capacity to successfully navigate them.
In 2012 John left KPMG to venture into the realm of entrepreneurship. He was a founding partner of an outbound call centre operating in Durban and Cape Town. In 2017 the business expanded to also handle inbound calls and currently has a thriving staff complement of 800. John has also served as the CEO and majority shareholder of a structural steel business for almost a decade. During this tenure, the business was re-capitalised and modernised, and the client and asset base grew significantly. John successfully steered the business through the COVID-inflicted financial storm whose ramifications are still being felt in the construction and steel industries. He has also recently overseen the successful implementation of a business focused on developing IP in the mass timber processing space. The company taps into that IP to offer innovative products to this sector. The business opened its first production facility 6 months ago and has recently concluded deals in Tanzania and South Africa.
Combining John’s practical experience navigating client, operational and financial challenges across a multitude of business sectors has given him the ability to effectively implement turnaround engagements.
In January 2022, John joined the EngagedBT team where his vast and diverse experience gained over the past 24 years has already shown great benefits to EngagedBT’s clients and will continue to add value to EngagedBT and its clients.
